Community Service – The Cares Program

Over the last few months, the Michael & Son Cares Team has been hard at work serving the community. With the cold winter weather finally moving in, many people are experiencing leaks and pipe burst in their homes mainline plumbing. When the temperature drops below 32 degrees, water can freeze inside your pipes and cause a burst or leak. That was the case with our most recent cares recipient, a woman by the name of Anne from Timonium, Maryland. A recent widow and stage four cancer survivor, Anne’s mounting medical bills left her little money for essential home repairs. So, when Anne received a water bill nearly three times the normal quarterly amount, she knew there was a problem. Having been a property manager for many years, Anne knew the issue was probably a major one and would require a skilled crew to correctly diagnose the problem. She immediately called Michael & Son who came out and confirmed her worst fear; a break in the mainline pipe. The mainline moves water to the home from the city supply and repairing it is a very involved and costly process. As she expected, the cost of the work was more than she could afford.

Wylace Liggon, the technician who had originally diagnosed the problem immediately reached to the Michael & Son Cares team who presented the case to Michael & Son owner, Basim Mansour. “When they (the Michael & Son Cares Team) told me about Anne and her situation, I knew we had to do something to help”. The following day The Michael & Son Excavation Team was on the site, digging up the street and repairing the mainline. Within a matter of hours, Anne’s pipes were repaired and she had water running into her home. A few days following the completion of the job, Basim received a letter from Anne that contained a poem (see below) she had written for him. “The poem Anne wrote me was another reminder why the cares program is so important and the impact it can have on peoples lives” said Mansour. You can see the entire story on the 4th episode of “Helping Hands” Sunday January 29th at 12pm on NBC4.
